With Android 2.2 showing up kinda unofficially on the Samsung Galaxy S it’s interesting to see HTC announcing that Desire will be getting Froyo (2.2) very soon indeed.. and by soon, we mean tomorrow. HTC Europe Director, Mark Moons, has posted this Tweet…
“We beginnen vanaf morgen met de upgrades naar Android 2.2 voor Desire, later meer devices”
Which, basically translated, means “Tomorrow we’ll begin 2.2 upgrades for the Android Desire and later devices”. He does state that the jump from Android 1.5 to Android 2.1 (which many HTC Hero owners have made recently) was a lot bigger and more work than 2.1 to 2.2. He also says that not everyone will be getting the update tomorrow as “there is a bandwidth limit”.
Let us know if you spot anything on your HTC Desire tomorrow.

An Android 2.2 ROM has popped up on samsung-firmwares for the Samsung Galaxy S. There’s a few issues, such as the wireless location not working and the internet stopping sometimes, but this – apparently – is a test ROM “by Samsung” carrying version I9000XXJP1.
If you’ve got yourself a shiny new Samsung Galaxy S then we’d probably recommend that you don’t upgrade to this right now. It really is for the hardcore ROM chefs.

A few days back we spotted the HTC Vision complete with T-Mobile branding. It’s a new Android device with a slide-out QWERTY and rumours seemed to point to it being released as the “G1 Blaze” on T-Mobile. However, we didn’t know just which T-Mobile.
Luckily sharp-eyed Liam has mailed in to point something out. On the “X” key you can just about see a Euro symbol (€) so it’s fairly safe to assume that this is headed to Europe.

Google Maps has just been updated yet again. Now on version 4.4 there’s a new “Places” icon in the app launcher which will find .. err.. places nearby. There’s also business hours and more place details plus you can now tap the “Navigation” icon to drive with 3D maps and live traffic.
Android 1.6 (and above) is needed, so let’s hope that the Hero 2.1 update appears for Orange users soon..
“Place Pages now have a bunch of new details, such as prices, parking and menu links to inform your quest for the perfect steak. You’ll also notice that the search results list now highlights business opening hours in addition to compass direction and distance — consider it your late night caffeine radar.”
To force the update, click into the Android Market, hit “Downloads” and then update Google Maps from there.

We’ve had a few emails now about the much anticipated Android 2.1 update for the Orange HTC Hero. Richard Williams kicked things off when he told us that Orange Tech Support confirmed that the update would start rolling out today. Daren Wood mailed in just now to say that his Orange Hero has just popped up with an OTA (Over The Air) update message.
Orange owners have had to wait for the big 2.1 update, which also includes improvements to the HTC Sense interface. We’re hearing that this is the “first part” of the 2.1 update and, even after the update, it’s still on 1.5. Hopefully that’ll change pretty soon, so let us know how it’s going for you.

1 in 10 contract handsets sold in the UK now run Android according to stats from GfK Retail and Technology. The overall share of the UK mobile contract market has grown considerably, rising from a mere 3% share in Q1 of this year to a 13.2% share in Q2. The report also states that…
“During this period, while contract market sales grew by less than 1%, sales of Android phones increased by a staggering 350%.”
It seems that the Google Android OS is becoming more and more well known, with Gfk Analyst Megan Badock stating..
“The figures suggest an increasing number of consumers are now asking for Android handsets by name. Operating Systems are no longer simply a by-product but a key selling point in their own right.”
