We’ve seen DC Universe Online several times now over the course of its development, and it’s failed to much impress us. Still, the game continues to generate interest, if only because Sony Online Entertainment is bringing it to the PS3, and many gamers have been waiting for a new console MMO, polished or otherwise, for a long time.
Last week at Comic-Con, SOE showed off the latest build of DCU and spotlighted a new feature with the awkward name “Play as Iconic.” (“Iconic” is what the licensed DC comics characters are referred to as in the game.) In the main game, you will play as your own custom characters, getting guidance and help from established veterans like Batman and Superman. But, as you’ve probably deduced, in the Play as Iconic bonus mode, you’ll get to play as DC heroes (or villains) in a 2-on-2 PvP match.

Sony will release “fully localized” versions of Killzone 3 (in Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese) and inFamous 2 (in Spanish) in Latin America next year. According to the company, the localization will include “actors, action, dialog, effects and every inch of gameplay.” We have no idea how “action” and “effects” are different in Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, but it sounds fascinating. Speaking specifically about inFamous 2, Sony states localization for the region will create new elements that will “allow gamers to discover this open world in a relevant and unique way.”
Also set for Latin American release: a pair of “Gamer Kit” bundles for PS2 and PSP this August. The PS2 bundle includes a system, two DualShocks, an 8MB memory card and “three top games.” The PSP one features the handheld, a travel case and “three popular games.” The announcements come a year and a half after Sony expanded into the other half of the Americas with PlayStation products, which, according to it, are now available in 18 countries on the same day as the US and Canada.

Capcom experienced another “sluggish” performance in its latest financial quarter — the first of Fiscal 2010, from April 1 to June 30 — and consequently blamed slow growth of Lost Planet 2 sales, among other things. Net sales for the quarter were down 2.4 percent year-over-year at 19 million yen ($219 million) and net income dropped a dramatic 90 percent from last year to the tune of 213 million yen ($2.5 million).
Although titles like Super Street Fighter IV and Monster Hunter Frontier Online showed what Capcom calls “steady growth,” LP2 and Monster Hunter Tri only sold at a “sluggish pace.” The first two weeks of Ghost Trick sales were also met with disappointment, although the game premiered at number two in its first week of Japanese sales.
The Japanese publisher also lamented “shrinking” US and European markets “under the stagnating economy,” as well as fluctuating exchange rates. Though sales across the board were lower than expected, Capcom considers its financial forecast for this fiscal year to be unaffected.

The last footage we saw of Halo: Reach introduced us to the Forge World design tools. The latest video to come out of Bungie is a lot more straightforward, getting to the “real” Halo stuff: the campaign.
The trailer after the break, featuring an excerpt from Marty O’Donnell’s score, shows everything from hand-to-hand combat to massive space battles, with plenty of armored Spartans looking very serious. You’d look very serious too if you were fighting to keep a planet invader-free. Or if you had to walk around in hundreds of pounds of armor.

Syd Bolton, who runs the Personal Computer Museum in Brantford, Canada, really enjoys Dragon’s Lair in all its many, many incarnations. Bolton owns almost every version of Dragon’s Lair ever released, which is saying a lot considering that game has been ported more times over the last 30 years than a Carnival Cruise ship. However, he hasn’t got them all, telling Joystiq that he’s missing the mobile phone version from 2005 (because it wasn’t available in his area) and the Amstrad CPC versions from the mid-’80s.
The picture above contains 47 versions of the game and its sequels. Bolton mentions that the image doesn’t contain the whole collection, as a few copies are in storage. We’ve listed every copy of the game featured in the picture after the break.

Reporting its second quarter financials for 2010, the unassailable Gameloft appears to remain unassailed. The company reports sales of €33.6 million ($43.6 million) for the second quarter, a gain of nearly 15 percent over the same period last year, which saw sales of €29.3 million ($38 million). Taking the first half of 2010 as a whole, sales have reached the devilish amount of €6.66 million ($8.65 million), an 11 percent increase over the €60.1 million ($78.1 million) earned in the first half of 2009.
Gameloft pins the increase in sales on “increased market share in traditional Java and Brew phones as well as by the massive success enjoyed by Smartphones around the world.” More specifically, the company’s sales in the Apple App Store increased by a staggering 113 percent. With more smartphones (and devices like the iPad) on the way, and with digital distribution becoming more popular, Gameloft expects to sustain its growth through the end of 2010.

Hudson is doing its best to make sure that its very pretty Wii platformer Lost in Shadow doesn’t get lost in the typically crowded holiday game release season. Unfortunately for those of us who want to play it now now now, the company is accomplishing this by waiting it out. Lost in Shadow, first revealed in August 2009, won’t be in stores in North America until January 4, 2011.
It’s nice, then, that there’s still more to learn about the game to keep us occupied. The latest trailer (after the break) and screens reveal mysterious gates that allow the player character, normally just a shadow, to take shape as some kind of light being, and move in 3D space.

Call it the new Xenosaga. Just as the Xenogears team left Square to create games in a suspiciously similar world for Namco, some of the tri-Ace staffers who made Radiata Stories are working on … Radiant Historia for DS, over at Atlus. Along with original staff like artist Hiroshi Konishi, Atlus’s own developers are also involved, including director Mitsuru Hirata, a veteran of the Shin Megami Tensei series.
With only a Famitsu leak to go on, all we know about the game itself is that it involves time travel in some manner. If you want to find out more by playing the game, you’ll have to time travel to November 4. And learn Japanese, we guess.

It’s a great day for people who love old, weird platformers (and who doesn’t?) with the European PSN release of Earthworm Jim HD and the PSOne version of Rayman 2: The Great Escape. Looking for something a little more introspective? Why not enjoy the demo for Flower, or download a few extra courses for Tiger Woods 11? Looking for something action-packed and introspective? How about a nice game of PSOne Pong?
Choose your platform to view the corresponding release list:
(Note: Continue past the break to view both release lists.)
